On July 4, 2008 around 8:00 p.m. in northeast Des Moines, local police found Miguel Cano wounded when responding to a report of a shooting within the area. Cano was taken to Mercy Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. Meanwhile, Hector Casillas arrived at Lutheran Hospital suffering from gunshots to both the abdomen and leg. Investigations determined that both Cano and Casillas were shot by Mario Guerrero-Cordero, and that Casillas had been transported to the hospital by a relative after the shooting. Police then obtained warrants charging Guerrero-Cordero with first degree murder and attempted murder, but Guerrero-Cordero has eluded capture and remained a fugitive at-large since the attack. The Des Moines Police Department prides itself with a homicide solution rate averaging 90% that is well above the national average of 65%. Therefore, wishing to preserve its reputation, Des Moines Police detectives are asking the public assistance in providing any information that would help locate this alleged murderer. Finally, there is also up to $500 reward offered for Mario Guerrero-Cordero arrest and successful prosecution.
