CT Killer escapes to Portugal

Daniel Costa believed to have stabbed his aunt multiple times and then buried her body in the basement.

NORTHEAST FUGITIVE NEWS -- The police in Danbury, Connecticut are seeking Daniel Costa, a most wanted fugitive for the murder of his Portugese aunt who had lived upstairs in the same home since his childhood. Ana Barros had been renting the third-floor apartment in the Costa home for more than 30 years, when Daniel Costa is alleged to have brutally stabbed the 55-year-old woman to death. Costa is then believed to have buried the woman's corpse in the basement in an attempt to conceal the crime.

Daniel Costa's parents and co-owners of the building on Housman Street, had long ago returned to their native country of Portugal. However, Daniel Costa remained in Danbury living on the lower floor of the house.

On May 15, 2010, Ana Barros niece, Annabelle Almeida, went to the home to check on her aunt, after receiving information that Barros had been absent from work for three days. Purportedly, Daniel Costa assured Almeida that their aunt was fine, however, within the next 10 days, Costa would leave for Portugal, and Ana Barros would remain missing. Meanwhile, Almeida would continue to drive by the home looking for her aunt's car. Eventually, on May 28, 2010, Almeida would find her aunt's silver Honda abandoned in nearby Rogers Park. Immediately, Ana Barros niece reported her missing to police.

Tragically, on June 6, 2010, search warrant for the home on Housman Street were executed, and the body of Ana Barros was discovered by Danbury police buried in the basement. Motive for the murder can only be speculated. However, one month before the woman's disappearance, BAC Home Loans Servicing filed for foreclosure in Danbury Superior Court. Daniel Costa had obtained $445,000 in mortgage loans on the property during the fall of 2007.
